The melon is one of the most common fruits that we often eat, with its large, flavourful fruit, so do you know how to grow it? Hami melon is grown in many regions of China, but Xinjiang is the most famous, and with the progress of society, greenhouse technology has been widely developed in the planting industry. The melons grown in greenhouses have a sweeter flavour and are more profitable, but there are still many issues that need to be addressed when growing melons for yield and profit.

Melon seed wholesaler will explain then what matters should be noted when growing melon.

Planting techniques for melon

1.Seeding preparation

The melon should not be planted continuously, but preferably in rotation with other crops for more than five years, and it is not advisable to plant cucurbits, legumes and eggplant crops around the planting site. Before planting, it is best to plough and autumn plough, 25-30cm deep, and carry out winter irrigation to press alkali and ripen the soil, which can eliminate weeds and overwintering pests in the soil. In the last ploughing, apply 2000-3000 kg of well-rotted organic fertiliser and the right amount of compound fertiliser per mu, mix it with the soil after spreading it, rake and level it, and make good drainage ditches. A week before sowing, the plot should be irrigated, which is the key to ensure that the seedlings are complete, and must be fully watered, but also cover the ground.

2. Sowing

Before sowing, choose a good variety and treat the melon seeds well. After selecting the seeds carefully, soak them in 200 times formalin for 2 hours and rinse them 2-3 times with water. In areas with a high incidence of viral diseases, the seeds are first sterilised with chemicals and then treated at a dry heat and constant temperature of 40°C for 24 hours before germination and sowing. The seeds must be sown at the right time, when the subsoil temperature is stable at 14°C. The seeds can be sown in holes. The spacing of the holes depends on the variety, generally spaced between 45-60cm, the sowing depth is also soil conditions, the soil is sandy, can be deep sowing, while the soil layer is deep, stop sticky, can be shallow sowing. Generally each hole with 2-3 seeds, mulch 3-4cm can be.

3.Buckle shed

The frame material for buckling the trellis can be chosen from bamboo, bamboo poles, cold-drawn wire, but generally choose bamboo, arch height of about 100 cm, so as to facilitate the staff into the inner manipulation, the two ends of the bamboo will be sharpened so as to insert into the ground, and then use twine and plastic rope to connect each arch, and finally covered with plastic can be. The plastic must be laid flat to maintain light permeability. After covering, it should be compacted with a block of soil to avoid wind damage.

4.Field management

Generally 3-5 days after sowing, seedlings can emerge, then we should break the film in time, and timely check the seedlings to replenish the seedlings, when the seedlings grow to 1-2 true leaves, we should start inter-planting. Leave 2 pigs in each hole, remove diseased and weak seedlings, and set seedlings at 4-5 true leaves, leaving one healthy seedling in each hole. During the seedling stage, weeding and ploughing should be done. Ploughing can loosen the soil, increase soil permeability and promote root growth, and weeding can prevent weeds from taking nutrients from the seedlings so that they can grow normally.
